AquaSim for spool installation

Time-domain analysis of subsea spool lowering through the splash zone with AquaSim

Spool lowering and splash zone analysis

Lowering a subsea spool through the splash zone is a demanding offshore operation, where waves and hydrodynamic loads can cause significant dynamic forces.

AquaSim performs time-domain analysis of the lowering operation, so that loads and structural response can be evaluated as the spool passes through the water surface until it is fully submerged.

The analysis can be used to investigate:

  • Dynamic loads and structural response – forces, deformations and stresses in the spool and its supporting structure throughout the operation.
  • Wave and current effects – how environmental conditions influence loads and dynamic response during lowering.
  • Splash zone effects – the response as the spool passes through the water surface, including water-entry and exit effects where these are included in the model.
  • Installation configurations – how different configurations and operating conditions affect the response of the system.

By modelling the structure and its interaction with the surrounding environment, AquaSim provides insight into critical load cases and structural behaviour during offshore installation.
